This pattern imitates the march brown nymph that has left the stream bottom and is securely held in the surface film as it emerges from its pupal shuck. At that brief moment in time, the mayfly is most vulnerable to trout predation as it struggles to become airborne. This pattern rides in the surface film with partial wing structures exposed.
