Book - Trout Fisher's Almanac

Whether you're off on a river expedition or seeking new inspiration for fly-tying techniques, you'll find ample and highly useful material on the complex sport of trout fishing in this compilation of articles from the pages of Sports Afield. Sid Evans devotes roughly equal space to pieces on the biology of trout, fishing tactics (including interesting notes on night casting), fly-tying, and rod-and-reel casting. The contributors include Thomas McGuane, Lee Wulff, Ted Trueblood, Art Lee, A. J. McClane, and Jason Lucas, whose 1964 article on the merits of catch and release is one of the earliest in the literature.

This stylishly written, well-illustrated resource includes 136 essays and 87 sidebars by nearly 90 writers. Among the topics covered are fishing history, trout species, fly-fishing, spin fishing, ultralight fishing, river and stream habitat, and the "feel" of the sport. Good books are available on all these individual subjects, yet the Almanac supplies a fresh, clear overview of trout fishing as a whole. In addition to contributions from such famous trout fishers as Ernest Hemingway, Herbert Hoover, and Thomas McGuane, the volume includes fine work from Sports Afield staffers Anthony Acerrano and Gerald Almy, whose uniformly clear and friendly prose is full of expert fish-catching advice. There is relatively little material on casting here, but a complementary video will address that topic. An excellent, all-around trout-fishing how-to. John Rowen
