The HS-1 will speed up your tying and increase the quality of your epoxy flies and jigs by rotating them at the optimal rate while the epoxy is curing. The Head Spin uses a unique spring wheel design to securely hold your flies instead of foam or cork, so it will not wear out. The Head Spin’s spring wheel securely holds up to 6/0 flies or moderate weight jigs. We tested the Head Spin’s wheel with Surf Candies, big herring and menhaden patterns as well as heavy Clousers and cone heads. We also tested our wheel with up to 1/2 oz jigs and had no problems holding them in the wheel. The Head Spin spring wheel holds your fly or jig hook between the coils of it’s spring which acts like a series of 200 + mini vises. NuWave Tackle's Exclusive spring wheel also features a special slip clutch design that allows you to grab, stop and reverse the wheel as you add flies, jigs or epoxy. The HS-1 also functions as a jIg turner and rod rotator/ finishing motor.  If you would like to build your own rods, the Head Spin quickly converts from a fly dryer into a rod dryer that will help you build better rods by leveling the epoxy coating applied to the rod blank and guide feet. Just press the rod butt into our RDC-RB rod chuck accessory, which securely holds rods with a wide range of butt section sizes.

The Head Spin Series Spring Hold wheel has no problem holding heavy flies and moderate weight jigs. We tested the HS wheel with surf candies, big herring and menhaden patterns as well a heavy clousers and cone heads. We also tested our wheel with up to 1/2 oz jigs and had no problems holding them in the wheel.

How it works

The HS spring wheel holds your fly or jig hook between the coils of the spring. Our specially selected spring acts like a series of 200 + mini vises which automatically adjust to hold your fly or jig hooks.

The greatest advantage of the HS-1 spring wheel over foam and cork is holding power and durability. Once a hook is inserted in foam or cork a permanent perforation is made in the material which does not heal. If the hook is inserted passed the barb - a large piece of the foam or cork will be ripped from the wheel when the hook is removed. When tying large flies and jigs, foam and cork can become excessively worn out and unusable rather quickly. Our experiments showed that 1/4 and 1/2 oz jigs tend to become loose and sometimes even fall out of foam and cork while rotating in the wheel. Foam and cork also tend to become dry rotted especially if exposed to heat or contaminants.  The HS-1's spring wheel cost us roughly 10 times more to produce than our competition's foam wheels, but we offer the complete product for less money than our competition by simply changing the way the product is distributed.  The bottom line - you get a better product for less money.

The Head Spin's Spring wheel is a dream for drying any of the circle hook fly varieties that require epoxy.  Patterns such as Bob Popovic's Surf Candy and Lefty's Deceivers (with epoxy heads) are some great flies to try on circle hooks.  The challenge is holding the hook which has the point facing the hook shank.  While foam and cork drying wheels have serious problems holding the circle hooks, the Head Spin's spring wheel and Microclips produce a winning combination that fly tiers are just beginning to recognize.

We designed the Head Spin Series Spring wheel to address all these concerns which we had as fly and jig tiers. Our nickel plated spring will not rust and it’s holding power remains consistent throughout repeated use.

Q1:  How long do the batteries last on the HS-1?

A1:  The Head Spin HS-1 Batteries last about 400 continuous hours at 7RPM.  When the batteries become very drained after 400 hours the Head Spin's motor will just turn slightly slower, but will continue to work just fine (the motor will not suddenly stop).  With intermittent use battery life can be more than 400 hours. 
So here is the worst case scenarios for the battery life:  
5-minute epoxy tying example:  If you dry 12 flies for 10 min. per batch you can tie approximately 28,000 flies on one set of batteries.
30-minute epoxy tying example: If you dry 12 flies for 1 hour per batch you can tie approximately 4,800 flies on one set of batteries.
One hour per day use: If you tie every day for 1 hour per day (that's a lot of tying) the batteries should last over a year.
Rod Building Example:  If you build 16 rods and dry them for 24 hours each that is almost 400 hours.

Q2:  What kind of batteries does the HS-1 use?

A2:  The Head Spin HS-1 takes 4 AA Size Batteries. 

Q3:  Why would I want the AC powered version of the HS-1?

A3:  Review the battery life explanation above.  We offer the AC version because there are people who are very concerned about battery life.  Professional rod builders may want to consider the AC version, but you really don't need it unless you intend to leave your HS-1 on continuously for over 400 hours.  We have found that people really like the portability of the Battery powered HS-1, you don't need another AC outlet and it is very safe.

Q4:   What is the major advantage of the Head Spin's spring wheel design?

A4: NuWave Tackle is the only company offering the spring wheel design on a fly turner.  Life, durability, accessibility, size, ability to use our versatile micro clips, etc.  The spring wheel costs us much more to produce then a foam wheel that our competition uses.  We are able to sell our product for less money than our competition even with our spring wheel by simply changing the way the product is distributed...and you get more for your money.

Q5: I tie small patterns for fresh water and large patterns for saltwater.  Can the spring wheel hold the small flies?

A5: Although the HS-1 Wheel is conservatively rated from #6 to 6/0 hooks, it can hold down to size 18 (and maybe smaller) using our Micro clips accessory which will fit the HS-1 Professional, HS-1 and HS-3.
